To celebrate the successful run of Directory of Dreams: Bay Area Lesbian Economies and Radical Care, 1970-1995, our current exhibition in partnership with the Bay Area Lesbian Archives, the GLBT Historical Society will be hosting an evening reception that is part mixer, part open-mic storytelling and reminiscence, inviting remembrance inviting community members to share their memories, stories, art, and love of Bay Area lesbian community spaces, nightlife, and businesses here and gone.
Directory of Dreams showcases and celebrates a curated handful of these spaces, including The Brick Hut Cafe, Womancraft West, Old Wives’ Tales, and the Women’s Press Project. But there are so many more than can fit in one exhibition on two short walls. Join us at the museum to share your own stories, memories, mementos, and more about these beloved community hubs of radical care.
Attendees will have the opportunity to sign up for short (5-7 minutes) open-mic slots to speak, perform, or present whatever they would like to add to the evening’s festivities. Show off your collection of matchbooks from San Francisco lesbian bars past, share a story about the best date you ever had at Full Moon Coffee and Books, recite an ode to your favorite meal from Artemis Cafe! The floor is yours.
Not interested in taking the mic? Enjoy some light refreshments while you network, mingle, and peruse and add to our community bulletin board -- put up business cards, flyers, or fill out a card with whatever you’d like to share. Or take a look at some photos, ephemera, and materials from Bay Area lesbian businesses on display from the GLBT Historical Society’s archival collections.
