Join us at this free, live, virtual event to hear the 2023 and 2024 Allan Bérubé Research Stipend recipients discuss their exciting research projects and talk about their experiences doing archival research in the rich archival holdings of the GLBT Historical Society.

Presenting Researchers:

Alex Melody Burnett, PhD candidate in History and Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, will discuss her research about working-class trans women’s varied experiences of sexual violence, labor, and intimacy in men’s prisons and jails in California during the 1960s and 1970s.

Martín H. González Romero, Associate Professor at the Department of Cultural Studies of El Colegio de la Frontera Norte, Tijuana, will talk about his research on La Casa Real Imperial de Tijuana, a drag organization founded in the 1980s, that held runway shows and beauty pageants to financially support LGBTQ community projects in Mexico; the Casa was associated with the International Imperial Court System founded by José Sarria in San Francisco in 1965.

Moderated by Molly June Roquet, Director of Archives and Special Collections at the GLBT Historical Society.

About the Allan Bérubé Research Stipend

Now in its third year, the stipend honors the legacy of Allan Bérubé (1946–2007), a queer historian and founding member of the GLBT Historical Society. The stipend provides grants of up to $3,000 to enable researchers to visit and consult our archives in San Francisco. The stipend was created by the Allan Bérubé Memorial Trust for Historical Research, Preservation and Education and the GLBT Historical Society.
