RADICAL HARMONIES SCREENING @
THE GLBT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Pat Bond Old Dyke Nominee Reception
for “Women Breaking Barriers” Exhibit

SAN FRANCISCO -On Sunday, September 23, from 2 to 5 p.m., the GLBT Historical Society will host a special screening of Radical Harmonies, Dee Mosbacher’s award-winning documentary about the women’s music revolution. The event, which is co-sponsored by the National Center for Lesbian Rights, will also have a reception to honor the nominees for this year’s Pat Bond Old Dyke Award. It is free and open to the public.

Radical Harmonies is a musical treat whose roots erupted out of women’s passion and social protest against the status quo. Mosbacher’s documentary explores the taboos, sexism and homophobia surrounding women musicians and their music in the 1960’s and early 1970’s and the women’s and lesbian music revolution that followed. Moving away from the “middle class white boy’s music,” pioneering women brought a new sound that reverberated across different cultures, socio-economic stratas, musical styles and physical abilities. The groundswell produced Ronnie Gilbert, Gwen Avery, Chris Williams, Holly Near, Linda Tillery and Meg Christian. These women and more set the tone for those to come. Groups such as the Indigo Girls, Bitch and Animal, and Lesbians on Ecstasy and artists such as Ani DiFranco continue the beat..

This program is part of a series celebrating the Historical Society’s current exhibit, “Women Breaking Barriers: Women’s Music from 1964 to 1984.” This exciting show highlights women’s music album covers, concert posters, and photos to showcase a vital part of lesbian culture and community building. It will run through late 2007.
