LESBIAN LIVES AND LOVES:
GLBT Historical Society Celebrates Women’s History Month

SAN FRANCISCO—On Sunday, March 19, the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) Historical Society will hold a special Women’s History Month open house, chock full of Sapphic stories, images, and artifacts. The event, from 2-5 pm, will feature a unique tour of the “Dyke March” exhibit narrated by celebrated photographer Cathy Cade, the presentation of new women’s manuscripts and artifacts to the Historical Society, and a behind-the-scenes tour of the women’s history materials in our world-class archives.

“Lesbians have been at the forefront of creating and telling women’s history,” said GLBT Historical Society Board Co-Chair Ruth Mahaney. “This open house showcases the dynamic, growing legacies of lesbians the GLBT Historical Society has on exhibit and in our archives.”

WHAT: “Lesbian Lives and Loves: The GLBT Historical Society Celebrates Women’s History”

  • 3:00: Artist’s tour of “Many Dykes, Two Photographers: San Francisco Dyke March Photographs by Jane Cleland and Cathy Cade,” where Cade will tell the back stories of many of the images.

  • 3:30: Presentation to the Historical Society’s archives of the manuscript of longtime lesbian activist and author Beverly Hickok’s newly completed photo memoir as well as numerous Dyke March artifacts

  • 4:00: Ruth Mahaney’s tour of rare women’s materials from the GLBTHS holdings.

WHERE: GLBT Historical Society, 657 Mission Street, Suite 300 (btwn. New Montgomery/ Third), San Francisco. One block from the Montgomery BART/MUNI station. Inexpensive city parking nearby on Mission (btwn. Folsom/Howard).

WHEN: Sunday, March 19, 2-5 p.m. Admission is free and includes refreshments and entry to “Many Dykes, Two Photographers” and the Main Gallery exhibit, “Sporting Life: GLBT Athletics and Cultural Change from the 1960s to Today.”
