Office Manager/Volunteer Coordinator

Half-time permanent position (.5 FTE) paying $16 to $17 per hour, depending on qualifications, plus benefits. Required hours include Tuesday through Friday 1 to 5. Some evening and weekend work is also required. Applicants need to be able to lift items weighing as much as thirty pounds on occasion.

The GLBT Historical Society is a small San Francisco nonprofit organization that maintains one of the preeminent archives of GLBT materials in the world. It makes these materials available to researchers as well as mounting exhibits and pubic forums throughout the year. It is run by a small staff, a very active board of directors and many volunteers. The Office Manager plays an essential role in the functioning of the GLBT Historical Society:

  • Maintaining office systems.
  • Recruiting and managing volunteers.
  • Providing administrative support to the Executive Director.
  • Serving as point of contact for both volunteers and the public.

  • The ideal candidate has:
  • Significant office or administrative support experience with good computer skills including strong familiarity with Microsoft office programs.
  • Experience working with volunteers, preferably managing volunteers. Experience recruiting volunteers and working with volunteers at events as well as in office is ideal.
  • Proven ability to autonomously undertake multiple tasks successfully.
  • Familiarity with GLBT issues and comfort working with the gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual community.
  • Comfort interfacing with diverse volunteers and the public.
  • Familiarity with community-based organizations or non-profit organizations.
  • Experience in other software programs such as databases, graphic design, or the internet helpful, but not essential.
